HVLP Spray Gun

Best HVLP Spray Gun

If you need to paint fences, decks, crafts, dressers or any other type of furniture; you should get yourself an HLVP spray gun or a paint sprayer for cabinets out there. First, let’s look at what the HLVP stand for, it is an abbreviation of High Volume Low Pressure. They are amazing at DIY painting and go up to higher performance systems.

Benefits of HVLP

  1. Less overspray – As the name suggests, this type of sprayer has less pressure, except for that there’s also more air here. This creates less waste in overspray and more paint reaching the surface. The smaller overspray makes the unit suitable for the environment because it’s producing less pollution.
  2. Health – Since it lets less material go in the air, this makes the air where you’re working, at least compared to other types of sprayers, way healthier for you. Less chemical particles in the air, more fresh air. However, you should always use breathing equipment.
  3. Money & Time– Naturally overspray plays a part here as well. HVLP cuts down the cost of paint, because of the less overspray it produces and the improved transfer efficiency it has nowadays. The effectiveness is also connected to the time you need for doing the work, and it’s obvious that when something is more active, it also reduces time. The value, however, can be seen if you are a professional painter, but even if you’re not, it is still visible, and indeed, any reduction is welcomed.
  4. Price – Once again we are talking about money, but this is a bit different. Because HVLP spray guns are usually smaller and are used on smaller projects, they aren’t that expensive. If you are someone who occasionally or often find themselves painting your fence or vehicle, you will see that in a short amount of time the sprayer will play itself out.

Drawbacks of HVLP

  1. Usually, they aren’t suitable for exterior projects such as fences, sheds, and decks; they limit you only to use them on interior jobs.
  2. It isn’t good with thicker paints unless designed so.
  3. The turbines of HVLP Spray gun can heat up too much, which can cause evaporation of products, such as diluents, which help produce the varnish of a surface. This can create a known effect called “orange skin” during the drying process. You can, however, solve this by adding more of the diluent, this will balance the otherwise loss caused by the heat.

Types of Paint

HVLP Spray Gun ReviewsSo we keep saying that the nozzle you use depends on the paint you need for your project, but let’s dive into what are the various types of color so we can be more clear.

Water-based – They are easier to use, compared to other types such as the oil-based. Naturally, they dry and cure faster because they are thinner and even when you clean up you don’t have to use harsh materials to get things spotless. They are more popular, because of everything that we just said, however, they are as resilient as the oil paint, and they shouldn’t be used on surfaces that require a lot of abuse. Nevertheless, they are great for walls and ceilings.

Oil-based – It is best to use them on a surface that can tolerate a lot of abuse. They need time to dry and cure, however, once settled they conserve and protect better and are more durable than the different water-based coats. Their finish is smooth and gives a natural gloss to the surface underneath. For oil-based coatings usually, the active ingredient in use is linseed oil or alkyd.

  1. Primers – Primers aren’t certain paints, and they aren’t appropriate for top coating, but they help paint attach better to a surface. It is best to use them as a base coat for your color, this will make a new durable layer. Note that you don’t always need a primer, but they are great for situations where you are working on a fresh surface, or you need to change the color.
  2. Finishes – A finish is how thoroughly dried paint looks like, it can be glossy, semi-glossy or matte, which is referred to as a not glossy finish. The top that can cope with abuse and cleaning the best is the gloss paint. That’s why they are most suitable for rooms like bathrooms and kitchens. The only bad thing about a glossy finish is that it is better at reflecting light, this can bring more illumination in a room, but it can also highlight any flaw on a surface.
  3. Matte – Because they don’t produce glossy finish usually they are used on areas you want to hide, such as the ceiling. Overall they are easier to work with, but they are also easily marked up, compared to other paints. When it comes to non-glossy finishes, they are two types, matter, and matter enamel, the later one is more durable and is appropriate for high traffic areas in your home.
  4. Satin and Eggshell – These two are in a category separate from the others because they are somewhere between non-glossy and semi-glossy materials. They have just a little bit of gloss, which makes them more durable. You can use them somewhere where you need this durability, but don’t want the glossy effect of the other paints.
  5. Semi-gloss – Logically this type of finish provides even more durability, because of that they are often used on trim pieces. They are easy to clean and can delay scuffing. Usually, they attach easily to any surface and need only one layer of coating.
  6. Gloss – This is one of the most used types of paint for the interior. They can be used on almost any wall, but they are also used on wood surfaces, because of their sheen effect. To get that smooth finish though, you need more than one coat. You will also need to wait for each layer to dry longer, since that’s how they work, while the non-gloss paint dries much faster.

Features to Look For

It can be complicated and intimidating to know how to choose a spray gun of any kind. However, we as PaintSprayerPro editors can help you by sharing our other articles on all sorts of paint sprayers that are available. With our crew, you will find loads of information. However, let’s first look at what you should consider when you are selecting a well-manufactured paint sprayer.

  • Quality – A lot of people make a mistake to choose a regular spray gun for high-viscosity coats such as enamels and ceramics. However, this isn’t appropriate, and you should at least consider getting the top airless paint sprayer if you are going to use such heavy finishes during a high production run.

With other types of coats, you should consider what your goal is? This will influence your decision because an HVLP gun has high transfer efficiency, but a conventional spray gun can provide you with a higher atomization rate. At the same time HVLP, LVMP or the traditional type can produce an automotive-quality finish.

  • Cost – For some performance is a bigger priority, but for others, the price may be rated higher. An example of value is that a conventional sprayer can use up to twice the amount of paint of the HVLP model. So it all comes down to what color you are going to use because the HVLP might not be able to work with it as well. We recommend you research this and decide what’s more appropriate for you.
  • Feed types – You should know that there are gravity and suction feed. The first one is common with people who work with metal equipment, like a car painter. This kind has a cup on top of the gun and gravity pulls the paint down to the mechanism for spraying. Because this path is relatively short, this makes the sprayer easier to clean and also extends its life.

The suction kind has a connection tube to go into the paint cup. The paint is sucked through the tunnel and pushed out thanks to the air pressure from the gun itself. This is demanding more energy.

If you spray over a gallon of paint at one time, you should look for a pressure pot, because it offers a higher coating volume. Plus you can control the pressure as long as it has that feature, this will make it easier for you to reach your production goals. Meanwhile, a continuous feed is offered by fluid transfer and diaphragm pumps. If you are looking at a siphon and/or gravity-fed spray guns, keep in mind they work great with low-viscosity paints.

  • Price – Consider the fact that you can’t fully rebuild or repair a lower cost paint sprayer and it doesn’t have as many options or flexibility when it comes to flow control, setup options and so on.

When you have a limited budget, you should research a lot to find the most versatile option on the market that you can afford. There’s a lot about spray guns and the stuff you need to know about them, but with our help, you will be able to make an informed decision. After all, finding and buying the best and right tool for you and the job is the most important task!

“How to” Tips

How To Use HVLP Spray GunTo produce a fantastic paint job, you first need to learn the technique and understand how to use an HVLP spray-Gun. We will go through the steps, so you have a basic understanding of that, then you can test them out and alter them in a way more beneficial to you and your specific paint project.

Step 1. Just in case of overspray or accidental pulling of the trigger in the wrong direction, we recommend you prepare everything that you don’t want to spray. Use masking tape and folio or other materials to protect all of these items.

Step 2. To get the HVLP Spray gun to start you need to switch on the air compressor, which powers the whole system. Usually, you would set the air pressure to around 90 psi, but we recommend you look at what the spray gun manufacturer says for the one you have. A feature most of the sprayers have is a pressure regulator, most of the time you will need to bring down that 90psi to around 50, but you can alter it as you go.

Step 3. So you’ve turned on the compressor, now you need to attach the spray gun to its hose. After that press, the trigger of your unit and hold it until the fluctuation at its base end. Now is the time when you can put your chosen paint into the canister. You might have a chart from the manufacturer which will help you determine how much you will need for the spraying. Once done that, hook the canister to the gun.

However, before you start spraying on the surface you’ve chosen, we recommend you spray another piece of for instance plywood. You will probably need to adjust the gun so you can get your wanted spray pattern. Usually, it’s determined if you will work on a narrow or larger area, but it can vary. Plus you can now test all types, so you know what will work best for this moment. Speed up the fan if the paint is running and if the mist is too subtle.

Step 4. After you’ve adjusted the fan, you will need to play with the fluid control. The perfect mist is one that’s heavy enough to be stable but without any excess. This will come with practice so don’t get discouraged. Hold the gun around 7 inches from the surface you will paint. The important thing is that it should be perpendicular to the surface.

Step 5. Move the HVLP gun horizontally, don’t focus on just one area for more than a few seconds, because the paint will start to run down. To minimize that, you should start from the top and make your way down slowly. Start your sweep before you reach the surface and as you come to it apply the trigger. At the end release the trigger, but make sure you continue the sweep for a few more inches, this will create a tremendous smooth effect.
